Destination Barcelona continues to consolidate its commitment to sustainable tourism. There are already 1,141 bodies and companies that have joined the Destination Barcelona Commitment to Sustainable Tourism, a hallmark that recognizes their commitment to a respectful management of the environment, culture and social and economic return. Of the accredited bodies, 576 are located in areas around Barcelona and 565 in the city itself.
As a result of the collaboration between Barcelona City Council, Barcelona Provincial Council, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and the Barcelona Tourism Consortium, the Destination Barcelona Commitment to Sustainable Tourism programme recognizes good practices in sustainable management of tourism and service companies. The objective is to advance in the sustainability of the sector in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. On the one hand, the aim is to encourage tour operators to carry out their activities more responsibly and carefully and, on the other, to respond to the growing demand of visitors to be able to travel with the utmost respect for the environment.
Ongoing commitment and support
Certified bodies are committed to implementing actions for continuous improvement in areas such as environmental management, cultural protection and social and economic return on investment. These actions include measures such as the installation of water and energy saving systems, the promotion of responsible practices among customers and employees, the application of accessibility measures for people with functional diversity and social integration initiatives, with training and employment for vulnerable groups.
With this new achievement, Destination Barcelona, which groups together the city and 12 counties in the province, has reaffirmed its position as a benchmark in sustainable tourism and highlighted its commitment to responsible tourism development that respects the environment and the local community.
The certified bodies and companies in the various counties of the province are receiving the awards at the events organized by each county in their region, while those in the city of Barcelona will do so on 6 March.
