With cobbled streets and surrounded by spectacular scenery, Rupit i Pruit is one of the most beautiful villages in Catalonia. This small municipality in the Osona region, formed by two historic centres, has kept its medieval essence intact while also being committed to sustainable tourism, offering visitors a full and respectful experience with its exceptional heritage and environment.
Charming villages
Located in the heart of Collsacabra, in the Osona region, Rupit and Pruit are two villages that have, since 1977, formed a single municipality of just over two hundred inhabitants. Rupit is sheltered by a large crag where the remains of a tenth-century castle lie, and it maintains its medieval charm, perfectly preserved in the rustic s sixteenth and seventeenth century houses and the baroque church of Sant Miquel. The outstanding wooden suspension bridge, which you will have to cross to access the town, is another of its emblems. A few kilometres away, the church of Sant Andreu presides over Pruit, a group of farmhouses, some of great beauty, that evoke traditional agricultural life.
Commitment to quality tourism
This unforgettable image has earned Rupit i Pruit the distinction of Charming Village, which the Catalan Tourism Agency awards to municipalities that have a special attraction or beauty and that currently only include twelve locations. Other recognitions also endorse the town as a quality destination. The UN Tourism’s Best Tourism Village of the World hallmark and its adherence to the Destination Barcelona Commitment to Sustainable Tourism highlight its commitment to sustainable tourism, while the Night Sky Quality distinction has rewarded its efforts against light pollution.
To preserve the authenticity of the municipality and ensure a pleasant experience for visitors and residents, the Council promotes measures such as controlled parking, which is located at the entrance. This initiative, in addition to providing tourists with charging points for electric vehicles, avoids crowds in the historic centre, improves safety and contributes to the protection of local heritage, since the proceeds are used to restore emblematic areas of the municipality, such as the old blacksmith's shop of Can Rovira, unique in Catalonia.
Experiences for all
Rupit i Pruit is also committed to accessible tourism thanks to La Mirada Táctil (Seeing through touch), an initiative by Barcelona Provincial Council that consists of a cultural itinerary adapted to the different needs of people with visual, hearing or intellectual disabilities or autism spectrum disorder. Families will also find activities tailored to their needs. The "Discover Rupit with Rupes" adventure allows children to get to know the village through a route full of games and challenges, and with "Caçations" children can find their own Christmas tió (log) in the forest.
Lovers of good cuisine, especially homemade and mountain cuisine, should not miss the local restaurants and artisan stores to taste local sausages and cheeses, as well as the famous "coca de la abuela" (grandmother's cake).
A natural paradise to explore
Surrounded by streams, lush forests, crags and waterfalls, the municipality is part of the Collsacabra Protected Natural Area, a place of great ecological value that you can discover by hiking or mountain biking. Among the most outstanding routes is the path to the Salt de Sallent, the highest waterfall in Catalonia, and the l'Agullola vantage point, which has some spectacular views. Nor should you miss the enchanted rocks, a set of beautiful stone blocks of different shapes surrounded by a magnificent beech forest, the Sau valley or the small Romanesque buildings that you will find scattered throughout the mountain.
Whether for a day, a weekend or a holiday, everyone who visits Rupit i Pruit will falls in love with it.
