Barcelona is known all over the world for its rich cultural heritage, in particular its impressive Catalan modernist architecture and the works of its most notable exponent: Antoni Gaudí. Taking inspiration from the great architect, Mosaiccos established itself in one of the city’s most historic neighbourhoods, El Born, with the goal of giving people the chance to delve into the art of mosaic making, an ancient tradition that Antoni Gaudí revolutionised in the 20th century through the trencadís (broken tile mosaic) technique. If you're looking for an original activity during your visit to the Catalan capital, this is an excellent option.
A creative activity inspired by Gaudí
Through iconic works such as the Sagrada Família, Parc Güell and Casa Batlló, Gaudí developed a unique artistic style in which nature was the main source of inspiration. One of the techniques he perfected was trencadís, the creation of colourful and generally abstract mosaic designs from fragments of broken ceramics, glass or other materials. This technique not only reflects Gaudí’s creativity but is also an example of material reuse, since he used waste ceramics and discarded pieces from factories.
Mosaiccos gives you the chance to put yourself in the shoes of the brilliant architect to create your own mosaic work, which you can design and make using recycled materials such as broken pieces of ceramic and glass. This is an activity that combines creativity and knowledge of Catalan artistic heritage with the spirit of upcycling.
From family fun to corporate events
What makes Mosaiccos special is its flexibility, offering activities suitable for families, groups of friends and work colleagues. One of the most popular is the Gaudí experience, a mosaic class for both children and adults in which participants learn the basics of the trencadís technique. In this workshop, which lasts between two and three hours, a master craftsperson explains how to use the right tools, pick a design and create an item of decorative art, such as a mirror or photo frame. Not only do participants get the chance to immerse themselves in Gaudí’s creative spirit, but also they get to take home a unique souvenir of the city made with their own hands.
For those interested in group activities or corporate events, Mosaiccos offers team-building workshops specifically designed to foster communication and teamwork in a creative environment. One of these workshops was attended by as many as 800 people, who collaborated to create various logos for their company.
In addition to workshops, Mosaiccos offers guided tours of some of Gaudí’s masterpieces in the city, such as the Torre Bellesguard and the Colònia Güell, along with walking tours that take in the most important buildings of Catalan modernism. The combination of a mosaic class and a tour is the best and most practical way to explore the great architect’s legacy while fully immersing oneself in his artistic production.
The art of reuse
One of the cornerstones of the Mosaiccos philosophy is its commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment, based on the reuse of materials to create new artistic pieces. In line with Gaudí’s precepts, Mosaiccos is committed to the use of broken ceramics and glass, as well as other materials such as sea glass, stones and fragments of broken items such as mirrors or vases.
This practice not only contributes to waste reduction, but also gives a new lease of life to items that would otherwise be discarded. As such, workshop participants get the chance to be part of a sustainable creative process that promotes circularity, demonstrating that it’s possible to create art of high aesthetic value from reused materials.
As you can see, Mosaiccos is much more than a fun activity; it’s a way to enjoy Barcelona in a responsible and enriching manner, immersing yourself in an art form which, besides being part of the local culture, promotes creativity and sustainability.
