Whether or not you’re from Barcelona, you’ve probably visited Tibidabo Amusement Park at least once, and if not, you’ve almost certainly heard of it. This iconic city entertainment venue has been around for over 120 years, making it the oldest amusement park in Catalonia and the second oldest in Europe. It is a unique, magical spot where you can travel back in time, but also a site that’s undergone renovations in recent years and embraced cutting-edge technology, such as virtual reality. All of these features, plus the park’s unbeatable location at one of the highest points in the city, make a visit to Tibidabo a perfect activity for the whole family.
What can you do at Tibidabo?
Tibidabo has activities for all ages and interests, with attractions for both thrill seekers and those who prefer less adventurous options. There are classic rides such as bumper cars and all kinds of roller coasters, including Alaska, which is water-based and perfect for little ones, as well as immersive virtual reality experiences in Beyond. Another highlight is the terrifying Espai 666 and the new free-fall ride Merlí, which is visible from all over Barcelona. Kids can travel to the Wild West with the Pony Rodeo and play and learn at CreaTibi by LEGO, while the whole family can enjoy 4D cinema, mapping, holograms and other interactive experiences.
The Zona Panoràmica (Panoramic Area), located at the peak of the park, features some of Tibidabo’s most iconic attractions, such as the Talaia (watchtower), which since 1921 has been giving visitors the chance to go up 550 metres and take in 360° views of the city. The Avió (aeroplane) was one of the first flight simulators in the world and still has some of its original features, such as the 1933 radio/telephone station. Meanwhile, the Museu d’Autòmats (Museum of Automatons), with its century-old collection, will enchant you, and the Carousel, with its magical period décor, will take you on a fairy-tale ride.
The Panoramic Area is free and open to everyone and offers several food options, so if amusement park rides aren’t your thing, you can come up here just to enjoy the best views of Barcelona and the surrounding area.
Fun in the middle of nature, with a sustainable approach
Tibidabo, located 500 metres above sea level, is the highest point in the Collserola Mountain Range Natural Park, an invaluable natural habitat with over 8,000 hectares of Mediterranean flora and fauna. Recognising its special location, the park has placed sustainability at the heart of its management model, with measures in various areas, from mobility to waste reduction and biodiversity protection.
One of its leading initiatives has been the promotion of public transport to reach the park. The Cuca de Llum (Firefly) funicular, which opened in 2021, is a key part of this commitment. Not only is this innovative transport system faster and more efficient, it also offers visitors a unique educational and visual experience, as they can enjoy views of the Collserola mountain range from the picture windows while learning about the species that inhabit it thanks to the interactive screens inside the carriages.
The park has demonstrated its commitment to the environment through several certifications and by signing up to the Destination Barcelona Commitment to Sustainable Tourism, ensuring that a visit to Tibidabo is not just a thrilling experience but also sustainable, eco-friendly option.
